One of the goals of this blog is to educate you, the reader, regardless if you are a customer or not. If you do have a chance to work with Teltek, you will likely hear many technical terms that can leave you scratching your head. About a year and a half ago, then new employee and current Girl On Wire, Carrie Green wrote a blog titled “Tech Talk for Dummies” which was a glossary of telecommunication terms. This proved to be useful to her, being brand new to the industry, while being a great reference tool for you, the reader. Listed below are more terms (and their definitions) which you may encounter when working with one of Teltek’s team members. Keep in mind; we aim to explain everything in layman’s terms so that by the end of it all, you are left with more knowledge and a smile on your face.

Teltek would like to extend its most sincere congratulations to the Emerging Technology Centers (ETC) and its President, Ann Lansinger, for being recognized as the “2011 Innovator of the Year”. As a fairly new tenant of the Can Company location, Teltek has already felt the immense impact of Ann’s hard work. She makes a point to be very interactive with all of the residents of the ETC, which Teltek greatly admires. Additionally, the ETC coordinates several creative events including happy hours, an annual mini-golf tournament and roundtable discussions.
Teltek is proud to call the ETC home and we hope to contribute our “trusted innovation” to the ETC and its inhabitants in the many years to come!

The next iteration of NEC DSX System Software has just entered “Beta” status in development. Version 3.40.11 is now available for testing via the NEC Dealer Forum or System Administrator tool. If you do not have access to this, here is a brief overview of the new features:
- Wakeup Call – this feature provides Wakeup Call capability for Motels and Bed & Breakfast establishments. Wakeup Calls are conveniently entered by request from the web-based Wakeup Call Manager at the facility front desk. Once a Wakeup Call is set, DSX automatically rings the room telephone at the designated time. When the guest answers, a voice prompt announces the wakeup. If the guest doesn’t answer, DSX waits 30 seconds and tries again. If the guest doesn’t answer the second call, DSX cancels the wakeup. This feature requires IntraMail Pro.

While I was driving into work this morning, I heard an interesting story from the disc-jockey (DJ) on the radio. He said that there was a study conducted recently that found a person is more likely to become impatient, angry or irritable if they are placed on hold on the telephone for over six minutes. Your anger mostly likely comes from the fact that you could be accomplishing other tasks. But in hindsight, six minutes is not a lot of time. In 6 minutes, you can send and receive a fax, prepare a service order or listen to that dreadful “Friday” song twice. Two things can be done to combat your hold time. First, if you have a wireless headset, you can wear that and complete one of the tasks previously listed. The second option pertains to your company specifically. If you purchase a product called Music on Hold, your customers will hear music (as the name suggests) while they are on hold. I know from personal experience, that having music while you wait is much more enjoyable than hearing nothing or the same advertisement over and over again. The only drawback is that sometimes, as with advertising, the music will be repetitive, often referred to as “elevator music.” However, Apple Inc. plays songs from the iTunes Library while you wait. So not only is there music, but different songs as well.
Being placed on hold is unavoidable. You can still complete minute tasks while you wait and for your customers, you can provide a more pleasant “waiting room,” thanks to Music on Hold.

Temperatures have dropped in recent weeks as summer moves to our rearview mirror. The autumn season is soon upon us and with that also comes the Flu season. The workplace is a breeding ground for germs. In a 2002 study conducted by the University of Arizona, researchers found that desk tops had 21,000 germs per square inch; phones had 25,000 per square inch; while toilet seats only had 49 germs per square inch. This data is alarming, but there are several things you can do to protect yourself from infection:

Hurricane season is upon us, and the East Coast of the United States has already been bombarded by two of them causing widespread flooding and power outages. Now, there are certain ways to prepare your business from an impending storm, such as boarding up windows with plywood or protecting important electronic equipment with a UPS. Oftentimes, hurricanes are accompanied by severe lightning strikes. If your office is directly hit with lightning, a surge of electricity can ruin your equipment, unless it’s plugged into a surge protector. However, an ordinary surge protector does not prevent your phone system from being shocked. That’s where the SurgeGate 4-Line Central Office Surge Protector comes in. With this product, you can plug in up to 4-wires (2-pairs) using RJ-11/45 connectors on a phone system. Now, you are completely safe for this active hurricane season!

It has been a little over a year since Avaya announced the End of Sale for the Avaya Partner ACS system. As with any End of Sale notice, products become harder to find as time goes on. Teltek is already seeing its vendors’ inventory dwindling, as well as put in place restrictions such as only allowing Teltek to order one processor at a time.
End of Sale Notices can be very frustrating. But fear not, Avaya has a solution: Avaya IP Office Essential Edition – Partner Version. This allows for the migration of the Euro Series 1 & 2 phones in addition to the newer, sleeker 1400 Series Digital Deskphones.
