The Federal Communications Commission adopted a rule on February 15th that requires Interconnected VoIP service providers to report significant network outages. A reporting requirement was already in place, but it applied only to landlines and cell phones. This new development holds VoIP service providers to the same standard.
A significant network outage is defined as an outage of at least 30 minutes duration that potentially affects a 911 special facility or at least 900,000 user minutes of interconnected VoIP service and results in complete loss of service; or potentially affects any special offices and facilities. Interconnected VoIP service providers must now report such an outage within 240 minutes of discovering that it will affect a 911 facility and within 24 hours of discovering that it will affect users and/or special offices and facilities.

One of Teltek’s customers was getting a “Waiting for Line” error when their employees tried to make outbound calls. Since this is typically an indication of a service provider problem and this customer has a maintenance agreement with us, Teltek promptly reported the issue to their phone and internet service provider, XO Communications.
Maintenance customers receive liason support as part of the plan. For information on how to report an issue to a service provider yourself, click here.

Innovation is the key to survival and for centuries it has led to improvements in all aspects of our lives from achitecture to medicine and everything in between. In today’s high tech society, innovation moves at the speed of light and sparks competition among the most creative of individuals. Bill Gates was quoted as saying “Never before in history has innovation offered promise of so much to so many in so short a time”.
The attached video, produced by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in celebration of their 50th anniversary, documents the vast difference between past and present automobile safety standards by engaging a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air and a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu in a violent experimental car crash.

One of our Baltimore-based customers relies on their Avaya IP Office door phone to communicate effectively with visitors to their office. It is installed on the outside of their front door and allows guests to
call the front desk to announce themselves. If the office wishes to admit the visitor, they press a button and the door unlocks, allowing the visitor to enter the building.
This customer has had difficulty in the past with weather affecting the quality of communications between their office workers and visitors. The existing door phone was replaced with a more weather-resistant model and that worked well for a while, but occasionally the call clarity problems resurfaced.
