Martin O’Malley (D) and leaders in the medical industry said Tuesday that Maryland will launch its Electronic Health Information Exchange in September, starting with hospitals in Montgomery County, the Washington Business Journal reports.

The Chesapeake Regional Information System for our Patients (CRISP) is developing the exchange, which will link hospitals across the state and enable medical record sharing. CRISP has won millions in federal grants for the project and $10 million from hospital rate payments as initial funding.

Montgomery County has five hospitals — Holy Cross Hospital of Silver Spring, Montgomery General Hospital, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Suburban Hospital and Washington Adventist Hospital — that will be part of the health information exchange.
