What lengths would you go to in order to promote your business? Would you dress up like one of the Fruit of the Loom gang or stand on a street corner twirling a giant arrow? Maybe you’d be willing to shoot a TV spot singing a catchy jingle or pretend you’re talking on a toy phone The more outrageous you are willing to get, the more memorable the effect will be. Memorable is not always the best route to take though; if your idea is offensive or too ridiculous, you could attract the wrong kind of attention and be seen as a laughingstock instead of being considered a groundbreaking visionary.

At Teltek, we believe in showing different sides of our company and capabilities. We utilize our telecom and IT websites to highlight our products and services through blogging, testimonials and detailed product information. Our employees are one of our strongest assets. In addition to having our techs in the field and our sales people out at appointments, we also attend, sponsor and occasionally host social events and seminars. This gives us the opportunity to promote ourselves and get to know our business neighbors and what their needs are.

Another way to keep your company front of mind is by featuring your company logo on apparel, giveaways and leave behinds. In our arsenal of marketing pieces we have custom designed folders and letter openers with our logo on it. Out and about, we proudly display the Teltek name by wearing it on t-shirts, fleece jackets and baseball caps.

We want to be known for our knowledge, skills, customer service and of course, our Margarita Party! Our annual salute to the tequila-based beverage is how we show off our fun-loving side and give back to the networking community we get so much from. If you don’t come up with a method of organizing your contact information, the problem could quickly spin out of control.

Since many of us at Teltek are big networkers, we are experienced with managing our business cards and have a few pointers to offer:

1. Cardscan: this product is a small, desktop scanner that can produce a digital image of one or both sides of each card and then transmit that information into a database. You can add notes, create categories and then export the information to contact lists. This is Teltek’s preferred method of business card management.
2. Three ring binder: Office supply stores have plastic pages with biz-card-sized pockets that will allow you to slip your contacts in for quick access and easy viewing.
3. Box them up: You can find business-card-sized boxes and baskets to hold your contacts and then organize them front to back alphabetically or by industry. Tabs within the box will help you narrow your search faster
4. Rotary card file- You can still find these old school organizers. Slide your cards in and spin!
5. Consolidate and Update: Get rid of duplicate cards and those that contain outdated information to lessen the load

Once you find what works for you, stay on top of it to make sure you are getting the maximum ROI for your networking efforts.

While some networkers may hold the opinion that business cards are outdated and information such as this should be shared electronically, cards are still a quick and easy statement of you and your business.

Make sure your own business cards are network-ready; they should be eyecatching with a clear messsage and current information. Headshots are not just for realtors anymore! Including your photo or an interesting graphic as part of the design will help your card to stand out from the rest.

Using phone and cabling equipment, Teltek’s head IP Office engineer, Mark Baugher, designed a hole inside the Teltek suite that was whimsical, yet challenging. Chris Nicoli, Rob Cox and Carrie Green represented Teltek in the competition, but since participants were not allowed to be on a team with co-workers, they were able to meet other business people and get in some great networking as part of the game.

Golf clubs, balls, food, drinks and prizes were provided by the ETC and a good time was had by all. There were prizes for the three best scoring teams and a prize for most creative hole. The technology companies who reside in the ETC were challenged to design holes that would be engaging and amusing and all of them brought their A Game! Some of the holes incorporated that company’s business practices or products, others celebrated Halloween, the Ravens or Baltimore in general and a few were automated with swinging gates and blinking lights.

The event was open to companies within and outside of the ETC and there was no fee required for anyone to participate. Check back at the ETC’s website if you are interested in joining us at the tournament next year. If Teltek is asked to design a hole for next year’s course, it will be something you won’t want to miss!

I was living and working in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and decided to relocate to Baltimore, Maryland. I searched online for companies I wanted to work for and sent several cover letters and resumes. I followed up by calling and emailing, but could not get an interview with anyone.

It became apparent that my geographic location was a roadblock that potential employers might be struggling with. Perhaps I would have better luck if I was able to meet some people and explain my plans and desire to move to Baltimore in person? I went online and searched for networking events in the Baltimore area and was pleasantly surprised by the number of opportunities I found.

Over the next few weeks, I attended numerous events. Within two weeks, I was offered a part-time job at a marketing company in downtown Baltimore because I met the company’s owner at a Baltimore Business Journal expo.

I continued to search for a full-time job and one magical night, I met my future boss (Chris), a realtor who found me the house I’m presently living in and two friends I’m still in contact with. It was a life changing evening that I owe to the power of networking!

You may have heard me say before that Teltek is a communications company above all else and we utilize networking to forge relationships and stay connected to local people and businesses. We are all about attending (and occasionally hosting) events that allow professionals to socialize and learn more about the exciting companies in the area. Back in August, we threw our annual margarita party for over 300 guests. While we were excited to show off our new office in the Emerging Technology Center, the primary purpose of the soiree was to introduce our clients, friends and strategic partners to each other.

If you’re not hip to the networking scene, I’m happy to introduce you to it with a few simple tools. My friend Anne created a web site called http://www.networkingnecessity.com/, which is an indispensable resource for knowing what’s going on in Baltimore and the surrounding area. Each month, she lists networking events by date and location and includes details such as parking and registration fees.

A few reoccurring events I would personally recommend are Lorraine and Sharon’s networking event, the Baltimore Business Journal’s Biz Mix and Baltimore Business Networking Group, all of which occur monthly. Business Networking International (BNI) Groups are another great resource; they allow one member from each industry to attend their meetings, so there’s no competition between group members.

The upcoming holiday season is an excellent time of year for networking with all the celebratory open houses, customer appreciation parties and other events that allow you to meet other business people while sharing some holiday cheer. Ask your co-workers if they know of any good groups. If you can’t find one near you, start your own!

Extended support of Button Modules on IP Office

• The total number of buttons on associated DSS units (EU24, BM32, DBM32, DSS 4450, T3 DSS) has been increased to a total of 1024 buttons per system, supporting e.g. 32 BM32/DBM32 modules.
• Some restrictions on the total number of certain type of button modules still apply.

Core Software

IP Office Essential Edition – PARTNER(R) Version (IP500v2 ONLY)

• The IP Office Manager has been modified to provide a simplified interface when managing a system in Essential Edition – PARTNER(R) Version mode. 
• Essential Edition – PARTNER(R) Version WILL NOT support networking (Small Community Networking) or IP telephones.
• Based on these configurations the Essential Edition – PARTNER(R) Version system will scale to a maximum of 48 extensions and 56 trunks. 

1000 User SCN (NOT Essential Edition – PARTNER(R) Version)

• IP Office Release 6.0 will increase the supported number of users on a Small Community Network from 500 to 1000 users
• Mixed networks (e.g. with Release 5 systems in the network) the limit will remain at 500 users.

On-hook Dialing (1400/1500/1600/9600 only)

• If set up, when dialing a number without lifting the handset, the phone does not automatically go off-hook (in speakerphone mode) but just displays the dialed digits in the display.  A user will be able to compose the dialed digits, e.g. delete or insert numbers.  After they have completed entering the number they have different options available to make the call:

◦     Life the handset

◦     Press the headset or speakerphone button

◦     Press the OK button

◦     Press an idle Call Appearance button

◦     Press an idle Bridged Appearance button

◦     Press the soft key labeled “Call”

• The feature can be set for all the users of the system or on a user by user basis. 
• By default it will be turned off so that it does not change the current behavior of systems being upgraded.

ISDN Redirecting Number Enhancements

• IP Office Release 6.0 it is possible, if the service providers allows, to populate the ISDN “Redirecting Number” field when transferring off-switch. 
• This is supported for BRI (T0) and PRI and ONLY with mobile twinning, not with forward unconditional.
• This feature is available in PARTNER(R) Version and IP Office mode.

Mobility Callback

• Mobility callback feature, being introduced with IP Office Release 6.0 provides the ability to call-back the mobility user after the user call a pre-configured DID/DDI number
• If no dialed digit is received within 30 seconds the call will be cleared.

Essential Edition Embedded Voicemail Enhancement – Direct Extension Dialing

• IP Office Release 6.0 will allow direct extension dialing from an Embedded Auto Attendant
• This allows the called to immediately dial the required extension number without first entering a menu option

Avaya IP Office Video Softphone

• IP Office Video Softphone will support end to end Video calls in a single IP Office and a SCN. 
• IP Office Video Softphone is available in Power User and Teleworker solutions.
• No other Video devices are supported in Release 6.0.

Licensing Changes

*With IUP Office Release 6.0 there will be only two types of application licenses – System Edition Licenses and User Profile licenses.  The system Edition licenses enable features and applications system-wide and the user profile license enable features and applications for single users.

Essential Edition

• Introduced with IP Office Release 5, this has no explicit license.  It is the normal IP Office mode of operation plus Embedded Messaging functionality.
• Release 6.0 will continue to be the mode of operation for the IP406v2 and IP500m but the IP500v2 will have two Embedded Voicemail ports included, with additional ports able to be added through the purchase of optional licenses, up to a total of 6 voicemail ports

Preferred Edition

• This license adds a 4-port VoiceMail Pro system to the IP Office system together with Meet Me Conferencing and Basic Call Recording capabilities. 
• The existing VoiceMail Pro 4 additional ports license can be purchased to add increments of 4 ports to the Preferred Edition license, up to the maximum supported by the platform (e.g. 40 ports on IP500)
• Note: The Conference Meet Me short code is only supported with the Preferred Edition license.

Advanced Edition

• The Advance Edition license can be added to the Preferred Edition license to enable customer service enhancements.  It contains the Customer Call Reported application (for real-time & historic reporting), the 3^rd party-Database interface (IVR) with Text-to_speech, Visual Basic Scripting, and ContactStore (for search and replay of call recordings).
• Note: A Preferred Edition license is a prerequisite for the Advance Edition license to be valid.

User Profile licenses available:

*Note – the following 4 profiles are mutually exclusive, only one may be selected per user. 

Office Worker -

• one-X Portal for IP Office (with Telecommuter mode disabled)

• Helps greatly in failover scenarios where users have to fallback on an alternative IP Office system and want to continue to access their personal productivity applications.

Avaya IP Telephone licensing

• In IP Office Release 6.0 all Avaya IP phones will need to be licensed

◦     this includes desktop phones like 5600, 1600, or 9600

◦     this includes wireless phones like 3600 and 3700

• Digital phones will not be licensed

Upgrades of IP500 systems from earlier releases

• IP500 customers upgrading from earlier releases to Releases 6.0 will get a smooth migration where each VCM channel license they already have will be automatically converted into 3 Avaya IP Phone licenses.
• Third party IP phones (e.g. SIP device) do not require an Avaya IP phone license.

Removal of VCM channel licenses

• VCM 32 and VCM 64 cards will always deliver 32 and 64 channels respectively (subject to existing codec restrictions)
• Each VCM 32 and VCM 64 card comes with 12 Avaya IP Phone licenses enables

*Note: Combination card does not come with any IP phone license.

Removal of VPN license

• IP Office Release 6.0 the existing VPN licenses will no longer be required.

◦     Add/drop conference participants on the fly

◦     Mute/un-mute selected participants (conference initiator ONLY)

◦     Record conference (IP Office Preferred Edition REQUIRED).  An announcement that the conference is being recorded will be supported due to legal requirements

IP Office Video Softphone

With Release 6.0 IP Office introduces – as part of the Teleworker and Power User profiles – a new Softphone application

• IP Office Video Softphone is a full feature telephony client that supports standard telephony features on a PC running supported Microsoft operating systems including new Microsoft Windows 7

Video Support

• IP Office4e Video Softphone supports end to end video calls on a single IP Office or within an IP Office Small Community Network
• Currently, video is limited to end to end calls, no multi-party conferencing is supported.

License and Provisioning

• Unlike Avaya hard phones, IP Office Video Softphone does not require an Avaya IP Phone License to work on IP Office

Virtual Server Support

• All server-based applications are now able to run in a virtual server environment
• IP Office server applications have been tested with VMware Server (free version), Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 and Microsoft Windows Server Hyper-V environments
• Customers can now run their own server applications together with Avaya IP Office server applications on one physical server
• Virtualization will provide more reliability and security as installing on the same PC without virtualization.
