Datto and Axcient Battle for Market Share – Who Won?

Sep 29, 2011

Datto, one of the leading data back up and recovery companies in the industry today recently responded publicly to a mass email that was sent out by rival competitor Axcient.

As a value added reseller of these products I too received this email message last Tuesday (9-27-11). To make a long story short the title of the email “Important Announcement from Datto CEO” followed by the picture below.
The email was in reference Datto’s announcement to migrate from AppAssure back to StorageCraft software on their servers.

Naturally this caught my attention so I reviewed it and forwarded the email on to a few other people in the same industry as Teltek. I had a long conversation about it yesterday with a good friend (also in the technology industry) who left me with a thought – who will benefit from this marketing? Clearly this is the kind of story that usually goes viral (hell we are reposting). Read below and you be the judge – we would love to hear your comments!

Datto’s Response:

Open Letter to Axcient CEO, Justin Moore

Sep 28 2011

Justin Moore, CEO
Axcient
2761 Marine Way
Mountain View, CA 94043

Justin,

Recently your company sent out a mass email with flagrantly false and misleading information regarding
Datto’s products and partnership with StorageCraft. While anger was the first reaction, disappointment
was my primary response. The MSP market has consistently voted with their wallets for Datto’s superior
products and support. I have always regarded you and your company as a worthy and fair competitor.
No one from your company has reached out to us to get the facts. Spreading deceptive materials is a
disservice to all parties involved. As channel vendors, I feel it is our job to rise above the fray and be
straightforward and honest when informing people about our offerings. I am happy to compete with
Axcient, but if we are to compete, let’s compete on the facts rather than spreading misinformation.

There is room in the channel for both of us to achieve success. Competition helps us stay focused on
working to improve our products, better serve the channel and ultimately our end customers. I am
happy that you and others compete with us every day. Competition leads to a win for the channel and
helps ensure that partners are getting the best possible products.

It is disappointing to see vendors spread blatantly incorrect information in the channel. No one wins
when vendors seek to muddy the waters. Ultimately, it speaks poorly on their business and is entirely
unnecessary.

Since you clearly seem misinformed, I welcome you to give me a call anytime and I am happy to explain
the product to you, and answer any questions you may have. If it’s more convenient, you can visit our
website and sign up for a free technical demo (www.dattobackup.com/justinsdemo) and a member of
our team will show you everything there is to know about our SIRIS offering.

Sincerely,
Austin McChord
CEO
Datto, Inc.
