Flu Season (Cough Cough) Has Arrived

Flu Season (Cough Cough) Has Arrived

Temperatures have dropped in recent weeks as summer moves to our rearview mirror. The autumn season is soon upon us and with that also comes the Flu season. The workplace is a breeding ground for germs. In a 2002 study conducted by the University of Arizona, researchers found that desk tops had 21,000 germs per square inch; phones had 25,000 per square inch; while toilet seats only had 49 germs per square inch. This data is alarming, but there are several things you can do to protect yourself from infection:

1. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends above all else, that you get vaccinated. Flu shots should be available at your local pharmacy or grocery store

2. Wipe down your desk, keyboard, mouse, monitor and telephone with an anti-bacterial wipe when you arrive to work and again before you leave for the day

3. Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before you eat

4. Avoid touching/rubbing  your mouth, eyes  or nose

5. If you have to sneeze, cover your mouth with your arm. Using your hands or not covering your mouth/nose is not an effective way to prevent the spread of germs

6. Avoid contact with sick people

7. If you are sick, if possible, do not go into work

These are just some of the steps you can take to prepare yourself for the 2011-2012 Flu season. Here at Teltek, we have anti-bacterial wipes and hand sanitizer readily available to all employees in both the Baltimore and Westminster offices. What has your office done to prepare? What steps have I left out from the list above? Share in the Comments section at the bottom of this post.
