Telecommuting, or working from a location other than a standard office environment is becoming a very popular solution to implement by companies wishing to save money on expenses such as leasing office space, parking, utilities etc. The use of telecommuting is on the rise and more companies are trusting their employees to be as productive in their own home offices as they would be in the workplace.
Wrike, Inc. a provider of social project management software, conducted a teleworking survey and received 1,074 responses to a variety of questions about working from home. The results were surprising; 83% of the respondents said they work remotely at least part of the day, showing that telecommuting is far more widespread than anticipated.
For the the opportunity to work from home, respondents answered as follows:
78% would give up free meals
31% would take a reduction in paid vacation
25% would take a reduction in salary
89% consider telecommuting to be one of the three biggest perks of working for a company that offers it, along with the company’s reputation and salary
What does all of this mean to employers? It signifies a desire by employees to have more autonomy when it comes to where they physically need to be in order to do their job. For some, telecommuting is not just an option offered to employees; it’s being increasing regarded as a benefit that is valued.
However, working from home is not everyone’s idea of a good time. For some, going to an office every day is a way to get OUT of the house for collaborating and socializing or to have a break from kids, pets and other distractions. While there are individuals who will be highly productive in a home environment that is more peaceful than the workplace, others may be tempted by the siren song of daytime TV or a comfy couch that beckons to them to take a nap.
So while telecommuting may not be suitable for everyone, the option of telecommuting can be leveraged as a commodity and viewed as a fringe benefit.
