What Makes Avaya a Good Business Phone Solution?

If you’re looking for a business phone system, you’ve almost certainly come across Avaya.


Avaya offers a wide breadth of phone solutions, including cloud services, unified communication platforms, and hardware (phones and more). They’re one of the giants in the phone industry, serving the majority of Fortune 500 firms, but they also have a comprehensive selection of great offerings for smaller businesses.

Why Avaya Is a Good Business Phone Solution


There are a variety of benefits to Avaya products in general – and each product, of course, comes with its own set of benefits and features. For now, though, let’s keep things high-level. Here are three main benefits of choosing the Avaya brand.


1. Avaya is proven in a wide variety of contexts.


Avaya is an industry standard, and it’s treated like it. The company has been around for over a hundred years (formerly as Lucent and AT&T). Avaya products are used in small business contexts and Fortune 500 environments alike (including organizations like Goodyear and the New York Mets). Avaya boasts that their solutions service 15 million calls per minute. That’s legitimately impressive.


And they’re used across industries, too. On their website, Avaya lists healthcare, hospitality, government, education, financial services, professional services, public safety, sports, and entertainment as areas of service. The benefit: you can trust that Avaya products have been used in your space.


2. Avaya offers a wide range of products.


Part of the reason that Avaya solutions are so commonly used is that the company offers such a wide variety of products.


One of their flagship offerings for small-to-mid-sized businesses is Avaya IP Office. This is a Unified-Communications-as-a-Service offering that can be delivered via the cloud, on premise or hybrid deployments.


Inside of this solution, Avaya Equinox provides a single app for voice, video, messaging, conferencing, and calendar to allow employee location from any device or location.


They also offer hardware, from desktop phones to wireless headsets – and even conference phones and multimedia devices (think desktop phones with an iPad-like screen).


The benefit: if you have a business phone solution need, Avaya almost certainly has a product to meet it.


3. Avaya offers powerful (and flexible) features and technologies.


Finally – and this is related to the previous two points – Avaya simply offers impressive, robust feature sets through consistently innovative technologies.


Besides being able to get the product you’re looking for from Avaya, you’ll be able to meet service needs you didn’t even know you had. Features range from the basic to the advanced.


For example, IP Office offers a hardened architecture that reduces security threats, toll fraud, and down-time – basic, but appreciable. It also offers impressive advanced features such as supporting up to 75 auto-attendants, integration with Salesforce, and the option to view email and voicemail in a single inbox (all options that allow this to play very well in a call center space).


The capabilities are also scalable, meaning that you can easily grow from just a couple of users to up to 3000. And they’re generally forward-compatible – meaning that, once you invest in the brand, the phones you use will be able to serve you for a long period of time.


Finally, Avaya solutions are also technically flexible. They can support analog, digital and (or) IP phones. For buildings that aren’t “VoIP read” due to cabling issues, this is important. They can also support POTS lines (of course), as well as T1/PRI or SIP for phone service – which is helpful in areas where phone service options are limited.


And Avaya maintains an open ecosystem, making customization and integration possible and potentially expanding its feature set even further.


Why Avaya Might Not Fit Your Business


While Avaya solutions are highly regarded, powerful, and can be great in many contexts, there are two reasons they might not fit your business.


First, the features and capabilities of Avaya aren’t always necessary, especially for smaller businesses.


Yes, Avaya can be great (just look at all of the capabilities we covered above!). But you don’t always need everything Avaya solutions offer. For example, for a small office, we often recommend the Nebulosity Voice Cloud PBX over Avaya.


This is a great option for small businesses, especially those with more remote workers.  It’s a low-cost option that gives access to big-business features and would allow you to portray a professional image to your customers. Your employees could be connected in the office or while on the road via their smart phones. In other words, it might service your needs perfectly – while Avaya might over-service them.


Second, Avaya might not fit your business if the solution you implement is not properly designed and deployed.


Phone systems need to be set up properly to work effectively. Some large national providers promise Avaya solutions without ever taking the time to visit your business’s premises. This can lead to issues if you have outdated cabling or lack the internet resources needed for proper functionality.
