Understanding Microsoft MetaSwitch

In May of 2020, Microsoft acquired MetaSwitch, one of the world’s leaders in cloud communication technologies. The MetaSwitch solution allows for users to essentially merge their traditional telephone lines – even ones that use old-school copper lines – with digital services like those offered in Microsoft Teams. When fully integrated, the Microsoft MetaSwitch tool will help businesses consolidate communication functions.

What is Metaswitch?

Metaswitch has long been recognized as a leader in providing software to the communications industry. Some of the company’s core offerings include VoIP softswitches and gateways, IMS core deployments, session border control and robocall blocking. The company works with more than 750 service providers, including Teltek. The Metaswitch solutions are hardware-independent, so they can work with any kind of technology. The company prides itself on providing unique solutions that improve unified communications for businesses of any size.

A Future with Microsoft Metaswitch

This past October, Metaswitch announced MaX UC Connector for Teams. This is a baby step toward a larger integration with the company’s all-encompassing communications platform. Teams users can now add Metaswitch’s MaX UC app to their deployment, giving them set buttons in Teams to launch a MaX Meeting or to call a particular contact through MaX UC. This is a simple integration but allows a way to integrate Teams and Metaswitch technologies.

What This Means Moving Forward

To be honest, this most recent integration with Microsoft and Metaswitch is not immediately important, but it alludes to a deeper connection in the future. By making this move, it shows that Microsoft cares about integrating this technology with Teams, so there could be more coming up. Metaswitch on its own adds a valuable service, but integration with Microsoft will make it accessible to Microsoft’s entire client base.

Microsoft Teams has become one of the most popular platforms for remote workers during the pandemic thanks to the ability to easily chat, start video conferences and share documents. Employees will continue to want to work from home – at least in some form – even after the pandemic ends. Businesses must have the right unified communications systems in place to ensure employees remain connected.
