Patching individual problems makes sense when they're isolated, a single failed port, one dead access point. It stops making sense when problems are recurring across the network, when replacement parts for aging equipment are hard to source, or when the cost of repeated service calls starts approaching what a planned upgrade would cost. At that point, a business is paying for the upgrade anyway, just in smaller, more disruptive increments, without the benefit of a network designed around current needs.
