My Day as a Teltek Technician

Nov 12, 2010

Officially, my title is Marketing Associate/Administrative Assistant, but at Teltek it is essential that every employee has a general working knowledge of all facets of the business. We make this possible by having new hires shadow technicians on service calls and projects. I had the opportunity to do so a few weeks ago.

I met Dave Fedorko, our newest telecom technician, at the job site at 9 o’clock and I helped stage the equipment inside the office. Dave began installing the Partner system, while I was tasked with installing phones and wireless headsets in each of the individual offices. My job might have seemed simple, but I had never set up a phone before. Additionally, Dave warned me that the headsets could be cumbersome because you have to find the right spot to position the automatic lifter – a small device that lifts and hangs up the handset when you make and receive calls from the headset and you have to find the right frequency for the headset to communicate with the base station. Thankfully, Plantronics provides a handy dial which you can turn to adjust the signal until the headset is paired properly.  After installing 6 headsets, I can safely say that I’m an expert on the matter.

Following the installation, Dave began training our customer’s employees on their new phone system. Each technician takes time to explain the ins and outs of the phone system in layman’s terms. We want to leave the customer confident and satisfied with their new product. I enjoyed this part of the day because I was able to use my customer service talents and modest technical background to help the employees set up their voicemail and answer any questions they had.

The last phase of the day was clean-up. Teltek makes a point to leave a job site as it was when we arrived. I thoroughly enjoyed shadowing Dave for the day and I look forward to doing it again in the future.
