Autism is defined as a complex neurological disorder affecting both children and adults. Autism is referred to as a spectrum disorder because the symptoms of autism can range from mild to severe and individual symptoms are unique from case to case. Individuals with autism demonstrate difficulty with social interactions, verbal and nonverbal communication as well as unusual responses to stimuli.
Autism occurs in approximately one in 110 births and is four times more prevalent in boys than girls. Autism spectrum disorders can often be reliably detected by the age of 3 years, and in some cases as early as 18 months (Pathfinders for Autism).
Teaching children with autism, I know the frustration, sadness and struggles families, friends and teachers face when having a child affected by this disability. BUT I also know the joys, triumphs and celebrations when that same child learns a new skill or acknowledge his own name for the first time…it takes your breath away and makes all of those tribulations worth while. Early intervention is one of the best chances a child has in learning to cope with the disability of autism. Things we often take for granted, enjoying an embrace from a parent, are a constant struggle for these children and adults. Sadly, there is no cure and the causes of autism remain a mystery.
Teltek recently made a donation to Pathfinders for Autism in support of former Teltek employee, Mike Shelah. Mike knows the difficulties associated with autism as well as the victories firsthand, his son has autism. Mike has recently embarked on a personal fundraiser, ‘40 Miles for Autism’. As he is approaching the age of 40, Mike plans to lose 40 pounds to prepare for a 40 mile run to raise $40,000 for autism awareness and research by donating all proceeds to Pathfinders for Autism.
