Who Will Rule The Virtual World?

Dec 7, 2011

In what seems to be a heated race for world domination, Google, Microsoft and Apple continue to amaze us mere mortals with software, gadgets and plug-ins that seem to continuously evolve and improve. Let’s take a close look at each contender (in alphabetical order to be fair) and place our bets…

Apple was started in 1976 by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak as Apple Computer. They began with desktop computers and from there the business continued to expand into laptop computers and other high-tech products and applications and is now famously know for iPods, iPads and iPhones. The latest buzz is about the newest iPhone, the iPhone4. Apple suffered a tragic loss this year with the death of Steve Jobs from Pancreatic cancer, but the company shows no signs of losing steam or popularity.

Google is name everyone knows and a vital tool for finding what you need on the web. This search engine was developed in 1996 as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were students at Stanford in an effort to create a universal digital library. What’s new with Google? This past year was significant for the company acquiring Motorola Mobility, unveiling Google+ and Google Earth hit one billion downloads.

Microsoft was started in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen with their development of BASIC computer language for the Altair 8800 computer. The first edition of Microsoft Windows was shipped in 1985 and and now the latest and greatest is Windows 7. Microsoft Office is still a staple for most businesses and has been updated with the 2010 version. To celebrate the Chinese year of the dragon, Microsoft has introduced a wireless mouse emblazoned with a very cool dragon design.

In February of 2010, Computerworld posted an article addressing the future of these three technology giants and you can read that here:
