It’s the day before Valentine’s Day, so I need to give a shout out to one of my favorite holidays. I owe this love of V-Day to my Mom, who always made a big deal out of the so-called “Hallmark Holiday”. She would decorate the kitchen with cardboard cupids and candy hearts and proclaim her love for all of us.
Even though the day is dreaded by some, having a holiday dedicated to hearts, flowers and candy is a grand idea in my opinion 🙂
You don’t need a sweetheart to enjoy a meaningful Valentine’s Day. If you find yourself without a deserving soulmate, Cupid’s arrow can be redirected into showing appreciation to someone who has affected your life in a positive way. Stationery stores are brimming with Valentine cards that are customized for grandparents, nieces & nephews, co-workers, friends and the other important people in your life.
If you can’t think of a person to adore, show your pet some affection by taking your dog for an extra long walk or give you cat a new toy to bat around. Better yet, make a donation to your local animal shelter. What would warm your heart up faster than that?

Another way to celebrate is to ridicule the holiday. If you Google “Anti Valentine’s Day” or something along those lines, you’ll find a (love)boatload of cards, movies, songs and events that have a “Love Stinks” type of theme. Cafe Press offers many creative t-shirt designs that will bring a smile to your face faster than a heart-shaped box of Godiva. Two of my favorites are “Zombies Only Love You For Your Brains” and “Valentine’s Day: Officially Cancelled Because It’s Lame”.
However you choose to recognize or ignore the day, I wish you all a very happy February 14th!
