Password Protection Pointers

Jun 14, 2012

What’s the password? The key to unlocking all types of information lies with the password, that crazy combination of letters, symbols and numbers that keeps your data secure. That same string of characters can cause devastation if found in the wrong hands. A prime example of this was demonstrated last week when news broke that 6.5 million LinkedIn passwords had been posted to a Russian hacking forum along with a request to help decrypt them. Linkedin users were prompted to change their passwords immediately.

There’s a lot of information out there with suggestions on how to design these codes and maintain password protection. The teksperts here at Teltek would like to share with you a concise list of the 10 best tips we recommend for creating a password and preventing it from being compromised.

1. Use a separate and unique password for each site

2. When creating a password, include upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers and symbols

3. The length of a password should be 9 characters or more

4. Avoid using personal information like birthdates and pet names, be wary of how much information you post on Social Media sites

5. Change passwords often. Set an automatic reminder for yourself to revise them about every three months

6. Use a password generator to create one

7. Use a password checker to determine the strength of a password you create yourself

8. Create a password by spelling out a random sentence with no spaces (example: Ioncelivedat123MainStreet.)

9. Never give your password to others or write it down

10. Utilize password storage devices. These are small USB keys that you can use as a password manager
