With the proliferation of power failures across the nation following strong summer storms, we should all be thinking about how to save power when we have it! Something you may want to consider utilizing is the Energy Saver feature on Avaya’s Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS) 5000 Series.
Avaya recently announced that the International University of Kagoshima in Japan has engaged the Energy Saver feature in an effort to reduce their power consumption.
The University deployed an Avaya ERS 8600 switch in the core and Avaya ERS 5000 switches at the edge in 2006, as part of a network connecting 2,000 PCs used in classrooms, research labs and libraries. As more students utilize video or voice over the network, the university has been struggling to reduce their energy use, especially following the East Japan Earthquake in 2011.
Avaya’s Energy Saver can automatically shut down Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) devices such as IP phones and Wi-Fi access points when they are not in use. It also dials back Ethernet port speed during off-peak hours, so that non-PoE devices maintain connectivity and service while using less energy. This allows users to reduce overall power consumption and energy costs by up to 40%.
