Jessica in Williamsburg, VA asks:
“A friend of mine had his flash drive stolen. How do I ensure that no one can access the information on my portable devices in case they fall into the wrong hands?”
Having a flash drive is very convenient, but the small size makes it easy to misplace, so you want to be sure that the data on your portable devices is secure. I can offer you two options; one software and one hardware.
TrueCrypt is software for your flash drive. It’s a freeware application used for on-the-fly encryption (OTFE
The Lenovo ThinkPad USB 3.0 Secure Hard Drive is a second option for securing your data. It offers 750GB and is faster than USB flash drives, but not quite as portable. It uses 256-bit AES encryption integrated into the drive controller and is software-free. All you need to do is connect the drive to your computer, enter the Personal Identification Number, and transfer your files. Data is accessed by pressing the green unlock button and entering your eight digit PIN into the keypad on the top of the unit.
In summary, if you prefer to use a flash drive, download the TrueCrypt freeware to secure it. If you would like more data storage in a slightly larger device, the Lenovo ThinkPad Hard Drive would be your best bet.
