I love the weather this time of year, so I’m always in search of new, fun things to do outside in Baltimore. This weekend I discovered a few new places (new to me), so here’s what I found:
The first is Robert E. Lee Park. This beautiful property is located on 415 acres with numerous trails, nature and environmental programs, a dog park and pavilions. Lake Roland in the center of the park offers opportunities for canoeing and kayaking. If you check the events calendar on the park’s web site, you will see lots of organized activities including hikes, campouts and fun activites for kids.
The main entrance to the Park is located on Lakeside Drive, but there is also access from the Falls Road MTA station. The area encompassing Robert E Lee Memorial Park was part of an 18th century land grant from Lord Baltimore to several Maryland families. Lake Roland was formed in the 1850s as a reservoir for the City of Baltimore. One of the notable landmarks at the park is the Greek Revival pump house and the dam is an awesome sight as well.
Paw Point Dog Park is a fenced, one acre off leash dog park located within Robert E. Lee Park. Owners will appreciate the benches and bag dispensers for cleaning up after their pooches. Please note that paid membership is required to enter the park. You can apply online and if your application is accepted, that membership will permit two licensed/vaccinated dogs entry to the facility. Dogs are welcome in the rest of the park as long as they remain on a leash.
I had my dog Trudi out there Sunday afternoon and there was plenty to see without going into Paw Point. We found lovely winding trails, a few fire pits and explored the dam. Following our hike, we shared a hot dog at the Haute Dog hot dog stand on Falls Road next to Bonjour Bakery. You must go here if you’re ever in the mood for a truly outstanding gourmet hot dog. Trudi and I recommend the HD Special.
My last recommendation is a bit unusual, but an interesting excursion nonetheless. Green Mount Cemetery is located on 70+ acres in Baltimore City. Bordered by Greenmount Avenue, North Avenue, East Hoffman Street and Ensor Street, it was established in 1838 and designed in the rural garden style which was popular at that time. The remains of more than 65,000 individuals are contained within its high stone walls. Tours of the cemetery are offered year round by cemetery employees and it proved to be a fascinating couple of hours.
I signed up with a group of friends to hike the grounds which have some very famous residents including former Baltimore Mayors, Maryland governors and John Wilkes Booth! The Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
There are breathtaking bronze sculptures, elaborate crypts and a serene beauty that you have to see to really appreciate. The cemetery is open to the public every day except Sunday, but it’s a great idea to take the tour so you can learn the fascinating history of this graveyard. If you can’t make it there or feel uncomfortable striding through a cemetery, the cemetery’s web site has gorgeous photos and a great deal of the property’s history.
If you are a dog walker, take your pup to Robert E. Lee Park, Green Mount Cemetery does not allow dogs, so FYI.
