Something I really look forward to during the holiday season is holiday light displays. Everything from one string of white bulbs to the totally over-the-top “Clark Griswold” phenomenon can help kick holiday blues to the curb.
To get you all in the spirit, here are a few can’t miss light displays in Baltimore and Columbia in case you were not aware of them. Two of these shows are compltely free, so no excuses for grinchiness!
Miracle on 34th Street
The small town of Hampden gives BGE a big present every holiday season with it’s wildly impressive Christmas light display. The residents of a block of rowhouses on 34th Street (the 700 block of between Keswick Road and Chestnut Street) string yards and yards of lights and decorate their homes with everything from Disney characters to candy canes to gingerbread men. There are even a few nods to Charm City that include Old Bay cans, crabs and Natty Boh himself! Be sure to check out the Hubcap Christmas Tree. The lights are on display every night from Thanksgiving weekend to January 1st, including all night on Christmas Eve.
Power Plant Holiday Light Show Spectacular
Talk about traffic stopping! Driving down Pratt Street is downright hazardous when this amazing show is underway. This year’s spectacular features lasers, flame effects reaching over 20 feet high, winter snow, fireworks and more! The special effects are choreographed with holiday tunes for a truly festive experience. This visual treasure is already underway and continues until December 31st. 74 performances will be held over 19 days, but exact show times can be found at this link: http://www.itsawaterfrontlife.org/?page_id=212
Symphony of Lights
This show, sponsored by Howard County General Hospital, features more than 75 lighted scenes, that are stationary or animated. It’s structured as a drive-through experience at Merriweather Post Pavillion that takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. There is a charge for this; tickets are $20 per car, $45 for vans and $125 for buses, with proceeds benefiting the Campus Development Plan for Howard County General Hospital. The experience runs from Monday, November 19, 2012 through Sunday, January 6, 2013 from 6-10 p.m. each evening.
