Avaya Will Bring Its A Game To Sochi Olympics In 2014!

Avaya Will Bring Its A Game To Sochi Olympics In 2014!

The Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee has declared Avaya as the official supplier of network equipment for the 2014 winter games being held in Sochi, Russia!

Avaya’ s network will provide a “full communications experience” to athletes, dignitaries, sponsors and fans worldwide and will deliver the first “Fabric Enabled” network that will allow access to game coverage from any device.

It is expected that over 75,000 people will visit the Olympic Park each day and more than three billion fans worldwide will tune in for the televised experience.

The Sochi 2014 Winter Game events will take place in two “clusters”; Mountain Cluster and Coastal Cluster. Each cluster will contain an Olympic Village. The venues currently under construction to support the Games include the Bolshoy Ice Dome, Fisht Olympic Stadium and the Ice Cube Curling Center.

In addition to the venues, specially created ‘Live Sites’ are being built in cities across Russia and those sites will transmit live feeds of events as they occur.

Avaya faces many challenges in this endeavor of Olympic proportions. Organizers expect the use of video streaming on mobile and tablet devices to be used widely at the games and the network Avaya provides will need to be strong and flexible enough to handle the load which will peak during popular events. The network will also be tasked with providing seamless connectivity across all venues. To aid connectivity there will be extensive indoor and outdoor WiFi throughout the Mountain and Coastal clusters.

Media, athletes and coaches will be able to tap into 30 IPTV channels across the Avaya network infrastructure. Press photographers will have instant upload access to thousands of photos from wireless enabled cameras, from the moment an athlete crosses the finish line.

This will not be Avaya’s first time at the rodeo, the company has a long history with the Olympic Games. In 2010, Avaya built the model for the first all IP converged voice, data and video network solution, which is the standard at the Games today.

The Sochi Winter Games are the first Games where network access will be largely wireless rather than wired. The vast majority of the network users arrive just as the Games are beginning and are effectively “guests” for 18 days. These guests will expect world class connectivity to match a world class event. Accordingly, Avaya will meet this challenge with a comprehensive solution capable of supporting a very wide range of electronic devices.
