Improve Chronicall’s Performance by Increasing Java’s Memory Limits

Dec 24, 2013

Want to  improve your call system’s performance? To start, take a  look at  your Java memory limits.

Chronicall uses the Java Runtime Environment to gather call information that can then be displayed at a user’s workstation.  By default, Java has a limit on how much RAM it will use to run applications such as Chronicall. However, by increasing the default amount of RAM that Java is set to use may potentially improve the its performance.  This can be accomplished on both the individual user and server levels.
For individual users (PC’s):
  • Navigate to Java in the Control Panel
  • Under the Java tab, click View. Your current version of Java will be listed in the Java Runtime Environment Settings window.
  • Double-click the Runtime Parameters field and enter -Xmx512m.
  • Replace 512 with the number of megabytes you want Java to be able to use. (Keep in mind Java cannot allocate more memory than is available.)
  • Click OK to save your changes.
  • Restart your web browser (changes will take effect after)
On the server you can increase the initial and maximum memory pools that are allocated for processes that Chronicall performs by:
  • AccessIng Chronicall’s  installation directory on the Chronicall server (usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Xima Software\Chronicall), then tomcat\bin.
  • Right-clicking on chronicallw.exe (note the w in the name) and run it as an administrator.
  • After selecting the Java tab, look to the bottom to find Java’s initial memory pool and maximum memory pool.
  • Recommended settings:
    • Initial: 125 –> Max: 512
    • Initial: 256 –> Max: 1024
  • Restart the service on the server for the changes to take effect

Increasing these limits may improve Chronicall’s performance, especially for larger companies with heavy call flows.
