RIP Clip Art

RIP Clip Art

Are you a fan fan of ubiquitous,  uncomplicated, rudimentary artwork?  If, so I hate to break it to you, but Clip Art is dead.  It’s official, the image service we’ve grown to know and love and to rely on (I’ll admit it) to add color to our presentations, documents and emails is going away.

Over the years the image library has grown from less than 100 images built into Word in 1996 to over 100,000 images today.  But today’s audience craves more than simple images.  They demand high definition and multimedia.  And that they will get!

This announcement should come as no surprise in light of Microsoft’s recent announcements and product launches and the plethora of images available by searching Google and Bing.  In fact, Microsoft will be directing the image search function within its productivity apps through Bing Images and display those filtered for Creative Commons licencing.

Regardless of it’s official status w/ Microsoft, Clip Art will live on!  We’ll continue to see it on legacy documents and presentations and it’ll probably get to a point, much like the floppy disk or the pager, that simply by recognizing it you’ll be dating yourself.  Good luck :/
