Microsoft will let their customers get their first official glimpse of the new Windows 10 today at their Consumer Preview event. They are likely to follow suit with their last product launch and make the Consumer Preview free to download on a time limited basis.
There’s been much speculation about how the new OS will be priced past the preview. Its assumed that Microsoft will follow in Apple’s footsteps and give Windows 8 and 8.1 users a free upgrade. However, COO Kevin Turner eluded to this being available via a rolling subscription (think Office 365.)
A Windows Technical Preview has been available to PC experts and IT professionals and is considered a work in progress version. Lifehacker has put together an overview of what to expect with the new OS based on the Technical Preview – check out the video:
Things to expect in the new OS:
- New browser – code name Sparta. Say goodbye to Internet Explorer and hello to Add-ins and Extensions
- Cortana – Digital personal assistant (to compete w/ Siri)
- Return of the Start Menu
- New Multitasking features including multiple desktops
The big question – WHEN? Reports have this targeted for realease mid-year although if this follows past performance, an October release wouldn’t be unexpected.
