Time to Head Back to School! What Your School or Library Should Know About E-RATE

What if there was a way for your library or school to gain access to high-quality technology without the high price tag? The Schools and Libraries Program (TSLP) has been around since 1997, and it remains an excellent way to receive discounted Internet, internal connections and telecommunications equipment. How could your school or library benefit from the E-RATE program?

The Many Benefits of the E-RATE Program

Depending on the location of your library or school, the discount offered could vary from 20%-90%. For example, schools with no students that receive free or reduced price lunch could receive a 20% discount, while schools with over 75% of the population receiving free or reduced price lunch could receive the 90% discount. The application process includes a discount matrix that will guide what your library or school will be eligible for.

E-RATE offers funding for five different types of service:

  1. Data transmission services and internet access
  2. Voice services
  3. Managed internal broadband services
  4. Internal connections
  5. Maintenance of internal connections

The services included in the E-RATE program for a discounted fee include:

  • Wireless access points
  • Wireless controllers
  • Managed Wi-Fi services
  • Wi-Fi software
  • Firewall services
  • Cabling
  • Caching
  • Switches
  • Routers
  • UPS
  • Racks
  • Leased lit and dark fiber
  • IRUs
  • Internet access

How Can You Apply for the E-RATE Program?

If you are interested in applying, you can complete an application here. Once you submit your application, it will kickstart the bidding process. Your library or school will get bids from local service providers for each category of service that you are requesting. Once the bidding period ends and your eligibility is confirmed, you will be able to choose the service provider you would like to utilize. Then, with your approved bid in hand, you can submit the application to the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC). The USAC takes care of the funding commitment for the appropriate amount. Once you have received your discounted service or product, reimbursement and discounts will be offered.
