Cabling has to go in the walls before furniture, IT equipment, or phones arrive, it's the one technology task that happens during construction, not after. That means coordinating tightly with your general contractor to get drops in at the right point: after rough electrical, before drywall. Skip that coordination and you get what we see too often: drops in the wrong spots, patch panels crammed into leftover closet space, all preventable with the right contractor on site at the right time.
Construction follows a sequence. Rough electrical goes in, then low-voltage rough-in, then insulation, then drywall. Cabling has to fit inside that window. If the cabling contractor is not on site during the low-voltage rough-in phase, the next opportunity is fishing cable through finished walls — which is slower, more expensive, and produces a messier result.
On a typical Maryland commercial office buildout, the window between rough electrical sign-off and drywall start can be as short as a week. Getting a cabling contractor scheduled, permitted where required, and coordinated with the GC before that window opens takes time that most business owners do not realize they need to budget.
