Telecom Titan’s Terrible Transgression

Oct 5, 2010

It’s safe to assume that in the year 2010, most Americans have a cell phone. What if I told you, for several years one of the major wireless service providers was inappropriately charging its customers? Unfortunately it’s the truth. Earlier this week, a story broke about how Verizon Wireless charged 15 million of its customers for data (email/internet) that they did not use.  According to Verizon’s official statement, “The majority of the data sessions involved minor data exchanges caused by software built into their phones; others included accessing certain web links, which should not have incurred charges.” Furthermore, most customers affected by this will see a refund credit from $2 to $6 on their October or November bill, with some receiving an even bigger amount. For the customers that are no longer with Verizon, a refund check will be mailed to you. Click here for Verizon’s full statement.

It is always important to keep close tabs on your bills. Telecommunication bills can be especially hard to understand, because surcharges/fees might be on your bill that you don’t notice because it’s a dollar or two. Don’t hesitate to call your service provider with questions about your bill. It may only save you a bit in the short term, but could save you much more in the long term.

For businesses, Teltek offers a Phone Bill Audit free of charge (must meet certain qualifications). For more information about this service, click here.
