What is Google Voice?

Jan 31, 2011

Everyone knows Google is the leader of internet marketing search engines, but entering the voice and broadband market? That’s right; as Google continues to dominate the technology market they are finding other ways to develop innovative applications that sync seamlessly with existing Google services and other software programs. You don’t need to be a genius to use a Google application, all you need is a computer or a smart phone.

One of the company’s latest achievements was the invention of Google Voice. (No surprise that they wanted to enter the world of telephone communications.) This program allows users to generate a Google Phone Number that “is tied to you, not a device or location.”

Google Voice generates one telephone number that can be called from anywhere in the world –you can direct the number to ring to six different telephones! This includes your work, home, and mobile phones. The application allows you to create custom voicemail greetings and call rules for each contact.

So what does having another telephone number do for you?

You can tell Google Voice when you want to receive phone calls, and on what line. If you’re going to be in meetings, and won’t reach the office until 3 pm? No problem. Depending upon how your contacts are grouped, Google Voice knows which calls go through at what specific time.

If you decide to have Google Voice record incoming calls, you can choose when you want to hear them. In addition, you’ll be able to prioritize messages – saving yourself time on the telephone.

Another plus to Google Voice, is it allows small businesses to appear local, regardless of where their customers live. For example, you’re based in Baltimore, but have customers in Seattle; you can create a telephone number with a Seattle exchange. This reduces the costs of long distance telephone calls, a benefit your customers immediately appreciate!

When calls and texts are received, they are immediately sent to a designated email account. That makes sharing information with your partners and employees quick and easy – it facilitates collaboration on existing and new challenges.

While using a service like Google Voice sounds complicated, it was designed by a team that simplified search engines! Find out more about the basics of Google Voice and how it works. Or find out how to integrate Google Voice into your Avaya or NEC Telephone system.
