A: Distinctive ring is an optional feature that can be requested from your service provider, like Caller ID or Call Waiting. This feature allows for multiple telephone numbers to exist on one line and distinguishes the separate numbers with noticeably different ring sequences. Fax machines are equipped with Distinctive Ring Detection, which allows them to recognize that a number coming in is a fax and not a phone call.
This option can also be utilized for offices or households where employees or residents need to know which calls coming in are for them specifically. Each phone can be equipped with a “ring selector” that will filter out all calls except for that person’s specific ring pattern. The variations utilize different tones and intervals of sound; think Morse code: long-short-long, short-short-long, etc.
Imagine knowing immediately that the phone call coming in is for your teenage daughter and not you. It would spare you the trouble of answering the phone and then having to alert her that she has a call.
Ring Pattern is a feature that is similar to the Ring Tone Selection option on a cell phone, it allows you to personalize the way you are notified of an incoming call by programming each phone individually.
