NEC DSX R3.2 Software Dramatically Improves VoIP Features ( 1 of 2)

NEC DSX Version 3.2 features six major Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and NEC IntraMail Voicemail enhancements. Below we will explore the first three major NEC System VoIP enhancements. In a later blog we will overview the remaining three NEC IntraMail Voicemail enhancements so be sure to check back in to Teltek’s Blog.

  • Peer-to-Peer communication between IP extensions
  • NAT Traversal on Any Router
  • Improved ATA and SIP Single Line Telephones (SLT) Support
  • NEC IntraMail Message Review feature
  • Enhanced Cascading Message Notification with IntraMail Pro
  • Improved maintenance functions when using System Administrator 3.1 software or higher

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Communications:

IP keysets, Analog Trunk Adaptors (ATAs), and SIP Single Line Telephones (SLTs) connected to another SIP device in the same office do not use VoIP Gateway circuits, they communicate p2p instead. This new technology enables NEC DSX users to have up to 32 SIP endpoints in an office talking to each other and never use up a VoIP License!

A VoIP Licensing is still required when a SIP device is:

  • Making an outside cal.
  • Participating in a Conference call
  • Using Room Monitor
  • Using an IntraMail mailbox or leaving a message
  • · Calling a SIP device in another office (i.e.  If an on-premise IP keyset calls an IP keyset in a remote office, each IP phone requires a VoIP License)

Note:

  1. Peer-to-Peer is enabled for all IP extensions by default; the system will automatically switch VoIP gateways in and out as required by the call state.
  2. 3rd-party Analog trunk adaptors and SIP single line telephones may not support peer to peer communications in the remote offices. NEC recommends the Cisco PAP2T and SPA8000 as they do support p2p in the remote office.

NAT Traversal is now supported on any router for NEC DSX IP Keysets

NAT traversal Defined:  a general term for techniques that establish and maintain Internet protocol connections traversing network address translation (NAT) gateways. Network address translation breaks end-to-end connectivity. Intercepting and modifying traffic can only be performed transparently in the absence of secure encryption and authentication. NAT traversal techniques are typically required for client-to-client networking applications, especially peer-to-peer and Voice over IP (VoIP) deployments. Now that NAT Traversal is available with any router without programming NEC DSX customers no longer have to limit your remote offices to the 2 LinkSys routers that were previously recommended in software versions prior to release 3.2 .

Here is how you set up NAT Traversal on the NEC DSX Phone System:

  • On the phone system router, forward UDP ports 5060 (SIP) and 1024-1088 (RTP) to the DSX system IP address.
  • On the DSX IP Keysets, use IP Keyset firmware 1.0.7.2 or higher.

Improved ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) and SIP Single Line Telephone SLT Support

Major improvements have been made to the NEC DSX Phone System’s integration with third-party analog trunk modules and single line telephones.  In general, ATAs and SIP SLTs work the same as local analog single line sets.
