NEC Can Help You Feel The Earth Move

Apr 4, 2012

Last month, NEC announced that it will add earthquake sensing devices to its Connexive platform. Connexive is a cloud-based product designed to facilitate Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication by connecting devices such as household appliances, automobiles, vending machines, industrial machinery, etc to a network.

NEC is partnering with aLab, the Japanese firm who designed the device-which is able to detect minute acceleration in three directions. NEC will manufacture it.

Sensors can be attached to key structural points of a building. Any type of movement will be recorded and then the data can be analyzed to predict how the building will fare in the event of a quake. This type of information could be used to find weaknesses in structures and assist in estimating the damage sustained after an earthquake has occurred.
