Green Bank and Sugar Grove are two small towns in West Virginia that have no access to cell phones or wireless networks. Can you imagine that? Some residents view it as a blessing to be unplugged from the wireless world. Others feel as if they are marooned on a low tech island.
These cell-phone-free communites are located within the National Radio Quiet Zone that encompasses 13,000 square miles in West Virginia and Virginia. The zone was established by the FCC in 1958 to limit interference with the work of the giant radio telescope owned and operated by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.
The Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope is a 485-foot, 17 million-pound structure that can be adversely affected by a musical greeting card played at the base of it. Limiting radio wave interference allows astronomers to hear much fainter signals from outer space.
There is even “radio police” in the form of a truck with sensing devices that patrols the area in search of rogue wireless signals. If one is detected, the source is tracked down and asked to cease and desist.
Some people who suffer from Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity have relocated to this zone and claim to find relief from their ailment. Communication is accomplished by traditional wired phones and payphones and there are no ugly cell phone towers in sight, including those with the fake tree brances trying to emulate real trees.
