This past Labor Day weekend was the second annual Grand Prix of Baltimore and although we don’t know much yet about ticket sales or economic impact, it was still a very exciting event for the city to host. The race course covered two miles of downtown streets and the winning car was driven by Ryan Hunter-Reay.
On September 8th, Nielsen Media released figures that showed that the national TV audience for Baltimore’s Grand Prix declined by about a fifth from last year’s inaugural event. Grand Prix organizers have promised to release ticket-sales information for the racing event and will also commission an economic impact study. 160,000 people attended the race last year. Crowds were noticeably smaller this year, attributed to occasional rainy conditions and the fact that organizers had much less time to actively market the race.
Personally, I did not attend this year’s race. Watching cars speed around a track is just not my thing. I went to the inaugural race because I knew someone who had an extra ticket and I wanted to experience it. As expected, it didn’t do much for me. I’m not much of a spectator when it comes to sports and other types of competitive entertainment.
I think competition in general is a very important component for society; it keeps the opponents sharp and encourages them to bring out their A game. You can learn a great deal from your competitors as well, whether it’s an athletic or business rival. Competition sparks innovation and creativity and those attributes are valuable for all participants involved.
