Google Wallet is a free payment service that facilitates online and offline shopping. The payment system developed by Google allows users to store debit cards, credit cards, loyalty cards and gift cards on certain mobile phones manufactured by Sprint or Virgin Mobile. Users can also store multiple addresses so they don’t have to keep re-entering shipping information. The app was released almost a year ago on September 19, 2011.
Google Wallet uses Near Field Communication (NFC) to permit a payment to be made by tapping the phone on NFC-enabled PayPass terminals at checkout. According to Google, approximately 200,000 stores, including Whole Foods, McDonald’s and Walgreen’s have NFC enabled checkout.
Until recently, only users with Citibank accounts and MasterCards could utilize the app, but on August 1st, 2012, Google Wallet expanded support to include all major credit and debit cards including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. Since the data is now stored in the cloud instead of on a chip in the device, users can disable Google Wallet online if a phone is stolen.
