The new iPhone is in the house…almost! So what’s so great about 5? Key features include a 4-inch retina display (326 pixels per inch), faster wireless, 8-megapixel camera, A6 chip, iOS6 and iCloud. It’s also 18% thinner and 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S. Dimensions have changed slightly, the new phone is 9 millimeters taller than 4S, but the same width.
iOS6 claims to be “the world’s most advanced mobile operating system” and this revamped version offers new maps and expanded Facebook integration, among other improvements. The A6 chip is rumored to be almost twice as fast as the A5.
iPhone 5 supports more networks worldwide including HSPA, HSPA+, and DC-HSDPA. Dual-band 802.11n wireless connectivity allows for faster Wi-Fi, up to 150 Mbps. Improved battery life promises consistent and longer-lasting power; up to 8 hours of browsing on a cellular connection, up to 8 hours of talk time and up to 10 hours of video playback time.
Another exciting improvement is in earbud technology. The new headphones are called “EarPods” and they have been engineered to be more comfortable and stay put to deliver a higher quality sound.
The phone now has three microphones situated on the front, back and bottom of the device. These microphones collaborate with new noise-canceling technology to reduce background noise and facilitate clearer conversations in loud environments.
One downside, the connector cables have been modified, so former cables used to charge and connect to other devices will not fit with the ports on this one. After nearly ten years on the market, the 30-pin connector cable has been replaced with a thinner cable named Lightning. For those users not struck by Lightning, Apple is offering a $29.99 adapter that will work with the new cable.
iPhone 5 can be pre-ordered starting today and will be released September 21st. The initial supply from Apple for release day delivery sold out online in less than an hour, so most of us will be waiting three weeks or more to get it.
