Apple looses market share on Tablets . . . What does this mean to you?

Oct 3, 2013

Normally when someone says’s the words cheaper, competition and China to me in the same sentence I assume they’re talking about a competitive product being manufactured in China for sale to American consumers. . . after all aren’t we the biggest consumers in the world?

However, while Americans have led the charge in overall consumerism historically, one can’t deny the importance of China on the global scale with their overall population and emerging status as a nation of consumers.  That’s why I shouldn’t have been shocked when I heard that the battle being described as “cheaper, competition and China” was the battle of market share in the Chinese tablets market.

Apple and Android have been battling it out in China for years and as less expensive Android devices become the norm, Android tablets have overtaken iPad sales.  But that’s not all that surprising considering we’re seeing similar struggles in other markets.  What IS surprising is where the other competition is coming from . . . small domestic competitors.  While most of these manufacturer’s make up less than 1% of market share individually, collectively they account for 50% of shipments in China.

The recent release of the “c” version of the iPhone might be the start of a trend towards limited versions of product using cheaper components in order to try and capture market share across the board.  Only time will tell.

What does this mean to you? I’m betting on additional device fragmentation across the board.  While the decrease in tablet and technology prices is a boon for business having the right tools to manage all of that disparate technology is becoming less of a nice to have and more of a necessity.  Teltek’s Managed Services provided real-time monitoring tools, Antivirus, remote access, password and device management for your devices, whether they’re PC’s, laptops, tablets or smart phones.
