According to The Baltimore Sun news, “A cyber attack forced Carroll County, Maryland Public Schools to shut down their computer network on Feb. 25, 2014 the Denial-of- Service attack that overwhelmed the school system’s firewalls.”
After reading this posting, you are probably asking yourself, What is a Denial-of-Service attack and what is the purpose of a Firewall?
Denial of service is a type of attack that can be nearly impossible to prevent because the hacker sends a request to the server to connect to it. When the server tries to establish a session, it is impossible for the server to find the system that made the request. Finally, the server is overcome with these unanswerable requests which make the server slow down or eventually crash.
