Is Graphene the answer to keeping you mobile?

Jun 27, 2014

Graphene is all over the news lately and there’s no wonder why.  It’s been called a “super” or “wonder” material and is very thin sheet of carbon, only one atom thick.  While there are multiple uses envisioned for the material, the one that peaked my interest is in battery technology.  This could be the solution for the computing industries power woes.

As we’ve become more and more  mobile and consumers demand better, faster, cheaper, the focus has been on features of the device (which in turn tax the battery) but not on the battery technology itself.  Graphene could change that. Research has proven graphene anodes are superior in their ability to hold energy that their graphite counterparts AND are able to be charged up to 10x faster!  The result could be high power Li-ion batteries with record charging and discharging speeds – imagine batteries that can recharge in just 20 seconds!!

Other interesting applications to keep your eyes on?  Flexible, unbreakable touchscreens, better camera sensors for low light photography and even living tissue (think bionic implants.)   I’m confident that however we see this graphene material introduced in the computing industry it’s sure to make for exciting developments in features, functionality for the mobile user.  Stay tuned!!
