We all have a plethora of devices that we use to help us stay connected and get the job done. Most of these tools are mobile in nature, whether they be a laptop, tablet or smart phone. Regardless if you’re in the office or on the go, you want to make sure that your device can keep up with you, both in speed an battery life.
Here are 4 tips to make your mobile devices run faster, longer:
1 – Get rid stuff you’re not using – apps, old photos and video and other data hogs. These take up a lot of memory and chances are (if you have regularly backup your device and are active on social media) you don’t need to pull up a picture on your phone that you took in 2012 on vacation to show a friend. You can jump on <insert social media outlet here> and pull it up to show your friend at lunch. Or the game you downloaded for your 2 year old to play to prevent a meltdown on that vacation with that he has since grown out of. It’s slowing you down – get rid of it!!
2 – Empty your browser’s cache and delete cookies – simple enough
3 – Turn off any thing that’s running automatically – updates, downloads and connections and only use the connections you need at the time. Of course if your IT department has automatic updates scheduled for corporate apps and security you might want to leave that alone – however everything else is fair game. For the love of data usage and processing power DO NOT have your device automatically update your apps.
As far as connectivity is concerned, that’s low hanging fruit and is easy to see real improvement w/ simple changes. For example, my phone offers the ability for voice and data connectivity over cellular, ability to turn it into a Wi-Fi hot spot for other devices, connect to a Wi-Fi network and connect to my car via Bluetooth. I’m exhausted just typing this – imagine how much that taxes your battery and processing power if your phone is constantly looking for all of these available connections. The chances of you needing all of these services is slim to none – turn off the ones you don’t need and watch your battery life extend.
3 – Close all the apps running in the background – If you’re not using it, it shouldn’t be open.
4 – Still running slow? Try “defragging” your hard drive or reallocating your phones memory (different lingo for different manufacturers/ OS’s) Defragmentation is a process by which you reorganize or compact the parts of your hard drive and thereby free up more usable space. “Defragmentation is advantageous and relevant to file systems on electromechanical disk drives. The movement of the hard drive’s read/write heads over different areas of the disk when accessing fragmented files is slower, compared to accessing the entire contents of a non-fragmented file sequentially without moving the read/write heads to seek other fragments.” Wikipedia
