Password management and overall data security have achieved top of mind status with consumers and businesses alike. The plethora of passwords and refreshes is a seemingly never ending river of information that we need to remember and can be overwhelming. Mobile phone manufacturer, Motorola, thinks they have the answer. Password tattoos!!!
Wait . . . what?! Yes, Motorola has teamed with a company called VivaLnk, maker of eSkin technology, to create “digital tattoos” to allow you to log in to your MotoX device with a touch. For a mere $10 for a pack of 10, the “tattoos” use near-field communication (NFC) and are nickel-sized and waterproof, lasting last for an average of five days of wear.
In a video posted to the Motorola blog on July 22, Deepak Chandra, project leader of the Google ATAP program, says “In the last 40 years, we have not changed how we unlock our devices, even though their usage has significantly increased. An average user unlocks their device 39 times a day, and it takes them 2.3 seconds every time they do so.” You do the math, while that only amounts to a whopping 1.5 minutes every day it’s not a total efficiency hack but somehow this could work out to be a little more intuitive and a little less annoying for users.
Is this so odd? Bio-metrics have been around for years, from your favorite James Bond inspired movies w/ a retina scan to our everyday uses as consumers like logging in to your PC w/ a finger swipe or accessing your safe deposit box (my bank put in hands scanners for initial access to the vault which I naturally though was the coolest thing ever 5 years ago.)
What do you think? Would you don a temporary “tattoo” if it would make logging in to your phone easier?
