If the upcoming release of Microsoft 10 wasn’t enough to get you back on the Microsoft excitement train, then perhaps this will. Microsoft will be releasing HoloLense in conjunction with Windows 10 later this year. I’ve heard it compared to merging the concept of Google Glass (wearable computer/ virtual display) and the Oculus Rift (headset used by gamers, that’s limited to virtual reality only.) HaloLense will do take the best of both concepts; virtual display, real world + augmented reality via real time 3D mapping. This is on the heals of a recent announcement from Google that they have stopped taking orders for their experimental wearable device. Coincidence? I think not.
The worlds first holographic computer, in addition to the onboard CPU and GPU, HoloLense will rely on a HPU (holographic processing unit) enabling the unit to be able to processes terabytes of info in real time. As it is a computer, just add wifi and occasional charging and you’re off!
Once this is readily available in the market, it’ll be interesting to see what other uses adapters will come up with. Also, if Star Trek is any indicator of where this is going, the next step will be ocular implants. I think I’ll opt out on that one.
