Part I: Is Colocation Right For Your Business?

Part I: Is Colocation Right For Your Business?

 Colocation For Your Business

Let’s first start with the question: What is Colocation? Colocation is a facility or space that a business can rent to house its equipment, and associated software. The major reason as to why a business would engage with a colocation provider is because people want to control and own their business equipment, but not the data center that it sits in. There are many reasons why you would want to own and control your own equipment. Some may be financial reasons, a matter of trust, or even the need to control. Whatever the reason may be, the urge to own equipment will continue to grow.

There are major advantages to colocation. These include:

  • Power
  • Cooling
  • Back-ups
  • Easy expansion without the upfront costs
  • 24 X 7 staffing and monitoring by engineers
  • Physical security
  • Bandwidth
  • Increased security

OK, this is all great. But, what if you are not ready to own your own equipment and software? You could buy your own equipment and place it in a colocation facility. Or, does it make more sense to put your data and applications right into the cloud? Well the answer can be either one. But, you need to make sure that whichever solution you choose, that it is right solution for your business. If you decide to choose colocation, then you should choose a provider that offers a variety of services. By doing this, you can ensure that you have multiple options, and can expand your current computing model to accommodate growth in your business’ future.

So, what other options do you have besides colocation? Stay tuned for ‘Part II: Is Colocation Right For Your Business’ for some alternatives to pure colocation, that may be an even better fit for your business!
