Did you know that 95% of “Best Companies to Work For” have an alternative commute option program? In a survey conducted by The Telecommuting Advantage Group, 47% of respondents indicated that they would consider leaving their current jobs for a “flexwork employer”. Employers also reap the benefits of Telework. The American Medical Association reported that their teleworkers had a 63% lower absenteeism rate than regular office workers. On May 5th, Teltek attended a program hosted by the Baltimore Metropolitan Council, the Maryland Department of Transportation and The Telecommuting Advantage Group. The purpose of the event was to familiarize companies with Teleworkbaltimore.com, a free resource for teleworking materials and information. This site promotes teleworking to Baltimore area employers in an effort to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, increase productivity and contribute to employee satisfaction with their jobs and workplace.
In addition to a detailed overview of the site and the many resources it offers, such as telework assessment surveys, the group was presented with statistics which clearly support telework as a solution to many problems facing Baltimore and its residents. While not a problem unique to Baltimore, many cities have similar programs and have experienced great success as a result of embracing the telework concept.
As a provider of telephone equipment and consulting to facilitate teleworking, Teltek is an enthusiastic supporter of the initiative and the Telework Baltimore site because we practice what we preach! All Teltek employees are equipped with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phones and remote computer access at their residences. This enables us to keep the office open during inclement weather; see our related blog article: Teleworking Through a Blizzard.
Teltek’s telecommuting policy was further defined and clarified with the help of the Teleworkbaltimore site. A telecommuting program is only as good as the policy in place, since so many variables come in to play and not having a policy to govern telecommuting will hinder the program’s success, a point driven home by Rick Albiero of The Telecommuting Advantage Group.
