Artscape 2012 Recap By Teltek

Jul 26, 2012

In one of my previous Girl On Wire blogs, Let’s Get Festive! I featured Artscape, one of the best festivals Baltimore hosts in summer. This past weekend (July 20-22) I attended Artscape on behalf of Teltek so here are some of the highlights!

This is the largest free-of-charge art show on the East coast and draws in over 150 artists and craftsmen and 350,000 attendees each year. The event takes place over 12 city blocks on Mt. Royal Avenue and Charles Street. It creates a bit of chaos for Baltimore City drivers, but it’s only for three days and totally worth it!

Despite some rainy weather, the 31st annual festival prevailed. On Friday night, Brian McKnight performed on the Wells Fargo stage. There were many other musical acts throughout the weekend including local band, Clutch and country singer, Julienne Irwin. In commemoration of the War of 1812 Bicentennial, the festival opened each morning with the national anthem performed on all three stages.

As usual, the event was bursting at the seams with colorful performers, art and vendors. Something I always look forward to seeing is the Art Car exhibit which displays outrageously embellished vehicles (one is pictured below)

A new attraction at the festival this year was the ferris wheel! The colorful wheel was placed in front of Penn Station and offered its riders terrific views of the city.

If you missed it this year, there is always next July. Mark your calendars now!
